KNOWLEDGE FOR LIFE ON THE WATER

Maintenance tips, boating insights and helpful information to keep you informed and ready for the water.

5 Essential Outboard Maintenance Tips

Keeping your outboard motor properly maintained is an important part of protecting its performance and reliability. Routine maintenance can help identify potential issues early, reduce unnecessary wear, and keep your boat ready when it’s time to get back on the water.

Whether you use your boat regularly or only on certain weekends, these five maintenance practices can help you take better care of your outboard.

1. Check and Change the Engine Oil

Engine oil plays a critical role in lubricating internal components and helping your outboard operate properly. Over time, oil can become contaminated or lose some of its effectiveness.

Check the oil level and condition regularly and follow the maintenance intervals specified for your particular engine. When an oil change is due, use the appropriate oil and filter for your outboard model.

Keeping the correct oil-change supplies on hand can also make routine service easier and more convenient.

2. Inspect the Fuel System

Your boat’s fuel system should be inspected periodically for signs of deterioration, leaks, loose connections, or damaged components.

Pay particular attention to fuel lines, connections, filters, and other visible components. Fuel filters and water-separating filters should also be serviced according to the recommendations for your engine and fuel system.

If you notice deterioration, leakage, or anything unusual, have the system properly evaluated before operating the boat.

3. Check the Propeller

The propeller is constantly exposed to conditions that can affect its performance. Before heading out, inspect it for visible damage such as bends, cracks, or significant wear.

Fishing line and other debris can also become wrapped around the propeller shaft. Periodic inspection can help you identify these issues before they become more serious.

If you are unsure about the condition of your propeller or related components, consult a qualified marine technician.

4. Inspect and Maintain the Cooling System

Outboard motors rely on their cooling systems to maintain appropriate operating temperatures. Proper water flow is therefore essential.

Pay attention to the cooling-water indicator while the engine is operating and inspect the system according to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

Components such as the water pump and impeller require periodic service. Maintenance intervals can vary depending on the engine and operating conditions, so always refer to the specifications for your particular model.

5. Follow the Recommended Service Schedule

One of the most effective ways to maintain an outboard is simply to follow its recommended service schedule.

Depending on the engine, scheduled maintenance may include engine oil and filter changes, gearcase lubricant, spark plugs, fuel filters, inspections, lubrication, and other service items.

Following the correct maintenance schedule helps ensure that important service points are not overlooked.
