Your boat trailer plays an essential role every time you transport your boat. Before leaving for the ramp, a quick inspection can help you identify visible wear, loose components or other issues that may need attention before towing.
Start With Tires and Wheels
Inspect the tires for visible damage or unusual wear and verify that they are properly inflated according to the applicable specifications. Wheels and related components should also be checked periodically as part of your trailer maintenance routine.
Check the Connection Points
Make sure the trailer coupler is properly secured to the tow vehicle and inspect the safety chains. Trailer lights should also be tested before leaving, including brake lights and turn signals where applicable.
These basic checks only take a few minutes but are an important part of preparing the trailer for the road.
Inspect the Boat-Support Components
Take a look at the winch, strap, bunks, rollers and other components supporting the boat. Watch for visible deterioration, loose hardware or parts that appear damaged or out of position.
Trailer configurations vary according to the boat and trailer model, so replacement components should be selected based on the specifications of your particular setup.
